In 1994 Hamelin Trust, in partnership with a housing association, built a purpose-designed bungalow to meet the needs of adults who, but for their profound disabilities, would have left their parental home to develop their own independence.
The Bungalow is in the residential area of Shotgate, Wickford and is close to a post office, a community centre and a range of small shops. It is easily accessible by public transport.
This residential home is CQC registered and provides supported accommodation to four people with multiple disabilities. The service is managed in partnership with parents and/or advocates of the residents.
The Bungalow is equipped to meet the needs of people with multiple disabilities and is wheelchair accessible throughout. It nevertheless provides a comfortable and homely environment, which is enhanced by a secluded south-facing garden with a patio seating area.
Each resident has his or her own tenancy agreement and a staff team provide 24 hour a day support and encourage each individual to be as independent as possible, despite their profound disabilities.
Residents participate in a wide range of domestic, social and leisure activities, accessing the many facilities in their local community. They also enjoy going on holidays whilst being supported by members of the staff team.
Frequent barbecues, parties and in-house music evenings are held at The Bungalow, to which residents are actively encouraged to invite their relatives and friends to assist in maintaining important family contacts.
