The Bungalow

In 1994, in partnership with a Housing Association, Hamelin Trust built a purpose-designed bungalow. This was planned to meet the needs of young adults who, but for their profound and multiple impairments, would have left their parental home to develop their own independence. Situated in the residential area of Shotgate, Wickford, the Bungalow is close to a post office, a community centre and a range of small shops, and is easily accessible by public transport.
This registered residential home provides supported accommodation to four disabled people with multiple impairments. The service is managed in partnership with parents and/or advocates of the residents.

The Bungalow is equipped to meet the needs of people with profound and multiple impairments and is wheelchair accessible throughout. It nevertheless provides a comfortable and homely environment, which is enhanced by a secluded, south-facing garden with a patio seating area and pergola.

Each resident has his or her own tenancy agreement and a staff team provide 24 hour a day support and encourage each individual to be as independent as possible, despite their profound impairments.

Residents participate in a wide range of domestic, social and leisure activities, accessing the many facilities in their local community. They also enjoy going on holidays whilst being supported by members of the staff team.

Activities such as barbecues, parties and in-house music evenings are held at the Bungalow. Residents are encouraged to invite their relatives and friends to attend these occasions, which also assists in maintaining important family connections.
